A short track speedskater, Ohno won
gold in the 1500 meters at the 2002
Winter Olympics. (The win was
controversial; Ohno moved up to
first after South Korean Kim
Dong-Sung was disqualified.) He also
won silver in the 1000 meters at
Salt Lake City. Ohno was already
something of a star: his youth,
mixed ethnic heritage, signature
"soul patch" chin whiskers and
fast-moving sport had made him a
21st-century favorite with teen fans
and the media.
