There's always one
guy whose the top gymnast in a
country. The guy usually is around
for a decade or so. No one has
accomplished what he has, no one
holds the titles he does. 5 Time US
National Champion, 4 Time American
Cup Champion, 2 Time US Olympian.
All in a row. Name one other person
who holds those titles. There is
only one. Blaine Carew Wilson,
nickname BC by his father. Born
August 3, 1974 in Columbus, Ohio,
Blaine started out as a soccer
player, and not soon after switched
to gymnastics. Blaine was 5 years
old when he first walked into a gym
in 1979. 22 years later, he is
dominating the sport. In 1995 Blaine
won his first national title. Come
1996 he won it again, and held it
going into the 1996 Olympics.
Although the Olympics didn't go as
planned for Blaine. He placed 5th
with the US Team, 10th All Around,
and 7th on the Rings. Blaine decided
to stick around another 4 years. Who
knew what Sydney would bring.
At the 1997 World
Championships the US Team placed 6th
as a team. Blaine was once again
National Champion heading into the
competition. 1998, Blaine domained
the Nationals yet again. In 1999
Blaine once again held the title of
US National Champion heading into
the World Championships. This time
he was determined for a medal. A TV
time out got his head out of focaus
and he fell. Blaine placed the
highest a US Man had ever placed in
World or Olympic Competition. 4th,
just .001 out of a medal. With
Sydney just around the cornor,
Blaine needed to get focused. At the
2000 National Championships, Blaine
dominated the field. Taking his 5th
National Title in a row! He
automatically made the Olympic team
no matter how good
or
bad he did at Trials. In Sydney
things didn't seem exactly right
from the start. The floor mat was
harder to tumble on and gave many of
the gymnasts problems...>>>

In Team prelims,
things didn't go quite right on
Pommel horse, John Rothelisburger
Dislocating a finger in warmups and
they didn't all pull off the best
routines. On Parallel Bars, Blaine
totally fell apart, and on High Bar
he met the mat as well. Team finals
weren't the best for the guys
either, They finished up the
competition in 5th Place. Blaine had
some problems as well in the All
Around. Finishing 6th After scoring
a 7.9 on Pommel Horse. He also had a
shot at Vault in Event Finals, but
came to Sydney with one 10.00 Vault
and a 9.60 Vault. He fell on his
10.00 vault and almost perfectally
nailed his second one. Yetagain,
missing the medals. After Sydney,
Blaine took some time off to tour,
and finally decided that he was
gonna stick around till 2004. He
knew USA Gymnastics needed him. He
moved out of the Olympic Training
Center and back to Ohio State, where
he is living with his sister, Amy,
and finishing up his phsycology
degree. On March 28th, 2001, Blaine
tied the knot. He got married to his
fiancee, Makare Desilets, at Justice
of the Peace in Columbus, OH. While
continuing on his training, Blaine
ran into another small "rip" in the
way. He tore his rotator cuff about
a week before the 2001 Gym Jam.
Blaine was out for the rest of the
year, he was unable to get his 6th
National All Around Title. Blaine
took the time off to spend time with
his wife and continue training. In
late February Blaine and Makare
recieved the greatest news they'd
ever recieved, Makare was pregnet.
June rolled around and Blaine was
hungry for competition. At the
Nationals Qualifer in Colorado
Springs, Colorado Blaine was
ready.
Ready enough to win by over two
points. He was on his way to
defending his national title. Luck
wasn't with Blaine yet again when
Nationals rolled around, as he
tweaked his knee on vault in a
practice session. After a rough
prelims Blaine wasn't on the top of
the list. Coming into finals Blaine
needed to hit. That night was the
first time since 1995 that at a
National Competition Blaine's name
was announced second, to Paul Hamm.
After Nationals
Blaine had yet another shoulder
surgery and spent his recovery time
with his wife. On October 4th, 2002
Wakaya Wilson was born. While
training with the OSU Guys Blaine's
shoulder is healing well and he is
spending time with Makare and Wakaya.
Blaine continued to train and came
back making his first international
competition back the 2003 American
Cup. Where he yet again, claimed the
title, becoming the first gymnast in
history to win 5 American Cups! As
Nationals Qualifer neared, Blaine
was continuing to experience
shoulder problems. At the qualifer
in Michigan, he only competed in a
few events. At nationals this year,
Blaine was determined to bring home
that title. Blaine had some rough
spots on his pommel horse routines
and when the results came out, a
little voice from the past, known as
Jason Gatson, had beaten Blaine out.
This is the lowest Blaine finished
in an all around National
competition in almost 10 years, he
finished 3rd. Blaine headed onto the
world championships. Alongside his
teammates worked their hardest and
fought for a second place finish.
Only the third time in history that
an American team stood on the medal
stand. At the end of the competition
a gymnast from China was quoted "I'm
scared, the americans did really
well this meet, they might take it
away from us in Sydney".
