Chastain began her
training with the national team in
September 1995 after spending two
years away from the program. Coming
into camp with very high level of
fitness, she showed the team that
she still has an excellent read of
the game, despite not having
competed in an international match
since August 8, 1993. A forward her
entire youth, college and national
team career, Chastain made a
seamless transition from striker to
defense and started in the back for
the USA on January 14, 1996,
eventually earning herself a
starting spot on the Olympic Team.
In 1996, despite suffering a serious
knee injury in the semifinal against
Norway, Chastain played every minute
of the USA's five matches at the '96
Olympics, helping the team to win a
gold medal. A reserve forward in the
first half of her national team
career, she earned 38 of her 55 caps
at defender in 1996-‘97.
In 1998, Chastain
played in 24 matches and was third
on the team in minutes played
(1,894). She helped the USA to win
their first-ever Goodwill Games gold
medal in the Summer of '98. During
1999, she should become the 10th
U.S. player to reach 100 career
caps. Chastain played all six game
in the 1999 Women's World Cup,
ending up with 1 goal and 2 assists.
In the championship game against
China, she confidently and skilfully
kicked in the last penalty kick to
give the US a second World Cup
