Won
the Volvo Order of Merit for the
first time in 2003 after a stunning
season in which he won four titles
on The European Tour International
Schedule. Also won twice on the US
PGA Tour and won his seventh title
of the year when he captured the
HSBC World Match Play Championship
at Wentworth Club, equaling the
record of five victories in the
event set by Steve Ballesteros and
Gary Player. It was the culmination
of two wonderful years which have
cemented him as a leading challenger
to Tiger Woods for the World Number
One spot. Highlight of 2002 came
when he won the Open Golf
Championship at Muirfield, his third
Major title to add to his US Open
Championship wins of 1994 and 1997.
Opened the 2003 season with
consecutive victories on the US PGA
Tour in the Mercedes Championships
and the Sony Open in Hawaii, before
turning his attention to The
European Tour and producing a
victory in Johnnie Walker Classic
and a successful defense of the
Heineken Classic. Produced
prodigious scoring to win, setting
respective record marks of 31 under
par in the Mercedes Championships
and 29 under par in the Johnnie
Walker Classic...Book Ernie Els for Your Event
Later in the year
went on to record a five shot win in
The Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond, becoming the first player to
win the prestigious event twice, and
also won by six shots in the Omega
European Masters, thus becoming the
first player to notch four victories
on The 2003 European Tour. Always a
strong supporter of European golf,
the Board of Directors of The
European Tour announced in January
1999 that he had been unanimously
accorded Honorary Life Membership of
The European Tour in recognition of
his US Open Championship wins and
his unprecedented three successive
World Match Play Championship wins
(1994-95-96). In his amateur days
back home in South Africa, he had
the natural talent to play rugby
union, cricket or golf as a
youngster, but reached scratch at
the age of 14 and decided to
concentrate on golf. In 1992, he
matched the feat of compatriot, Gary
Player, by completing a hat-trick of
South African Open, PGA and Masters
titles.
