Fuzzy blossomed as a superstar in
1979 when he won the Masters in his
first attempt. Since that victory he
has won 9 tournaments, including the
1984 U.S. Open in which he shot a
playoff round 67 - the lowest
playoff score in U.S. Open history -
to defeat Greg Norman by 8 shots. In
addition, he holds the tournament
record for the PGA Tour Skins Game,
winning $370,000 in 1986.
In recent years, Fuzzy has cut back
on his tournament participation
because of numerous outside
involvements, including golf course
design and development. He served as
player consultant for the TPC at
Summerlin, host course of the Las
Vegas Invitational. Fuzzy also
helped design the TPC at Southwind
in Memphis, Tennessee, site of the
annual Federal Express St. Jude
Classic. Zoeller's design philosophy
is simple - build a course that the
average golfer can enjoy. He
design's holes that are picturesque,
yet fun for even the 18 handicapper.
One great example is the Zoeller
designed Covered Bridge in
Sellersburg, Indiana which opened on
May 16, 1994 with golf stars John
Daly, Arnold Palmer and Chi Chi
Rodriguez there to celebrate the
Grand Opening with Fuzzy.
This year was also special because
it marked a successful year on tour
for Fuzzy. He finished 2nd five
times and ended up 5th on the money
list, winning a career best
$1,016,804. What truly sets Fuzzy
apart is his unique approach to the
game and his laid-back attitude. As
Fuzzy puts it, "I want people, when
they play with me, I want 'em to be
beaten at their best and at the top
of their game, so I like guys to
come out and relax, have fun and
shoot birdies because it, makes me
play well too."
