Jack,
"the Golden Bear", remains one of
golf's driving forces off the
course. The name Nicklaus has long
been associated with greatness on a
golf course. The 20 major

four PGA TOUR events, including his
42nd Masters Tournament, but missed
the cut each time out...Did not play
in the U.S. Open for the first time
since 1957...Played in seven
official Champions Tour events and
registered two top-10s...Teamed with
Arnold Palmer at Liberty Mutual
Legends of Golf, played on their
co-designed course, The King & Bear,
in St. Augustine, FL...T4 at the
U.S. Senior Open at Salem and
finished fourth at the inaugural
Siebel Classic in Silcon
Valley...Honored by American Society
of Golf Course Architects with its
2001 Donald Ross Award...Accepted
invitation to become member at
Augusta National, joining Arnold
Palmer as only former champions
invited as full-fledged
members...Named Captain of 2003
United States Presidents Cup team
for the second time.
Registered two top-10 finishes...T4
at the U.S. Senior Open and finished
fourth at the inaugural Siebel
Classic in Silicon Valley...Made a
spirited run at the U.S. Senior Open
before bogeys on the 15th and 16th
holes the final day ended his
chances...Started the final round of
the Siebel event one stroke back of
Hale Irwin, but 1-under 71 at Coyote
Creek placed him fourth, his best
Champions Tour finish since T2 at
the 1997 PGA Seniors' Championship.
1999: Underwent hip replacement
surgery in January and played in
only three official tournaments on
the Champions Tour...Did not play
until midway thru the year at the
Bell Atlantic Classic. Carded two
rounds of 70 on the weekend at
Hartefeld National and finished 18th
near Philadelphia. 1998: Hobbled by
a painful left hip for the majority
of the year...Closed with 68 at
Augusta National and T6 at The
Masters, four strokes back of
eventual winner Mark O'Meara...Ended
his remarkable run of 154 straight
appearances in major championships
when he chose not to compete in the
PGA Championship at Sahalee CC.
1997: Broke Sam Snead's record for
most rounds played at the Masters
with his 147th on Sunday...Jack
Nicklaus...Played his 10,000th hole
at the U.S. Open at Congressional
CC. 1996: Became the first player to
win the same Champions Tour event
four times when he claimed The
Tradition. Victory in Arizona was
his 100th as a professional and was
his eighth senior major
championship, the most by any player
over 50.
