Jari
Kurri, the Finnish phenom, has
earned the reputation as one of the
most outstanding two way wingers
ever to play in the NHL. Kurri

career, becoming only the eighth
NHLer ever to hit the 600 mark and
surpassed the Peter "The Great"
Stastny as the highest scoring
European player late in 1993. Kurri
began his career in Finland as a
member of Jokerit Helsinki in 1977.
During the three years he played in
Finland he represented his country
at the World Junior Championships
and in the 1980 Olympics. Kurri left
Finland for the Edmonton Oilers when

Although Kurri played most of his
career in the shadow of Wayne
Gretzky, he has posted some
incredible season totals of his own.
The right winger netted 52 goals in
the 1983-84 campaign and followed up
that season with an amazing
71-64-135 with 19 postseason goals.
In 1985-86 Kurri proved that he was
a bonafide superstar by potting 68
goals. Postseason success arrived
again for Kurri when he led the NHL
in playoff goals in 1987 and 1988,
and earned two more engravings on
the Cup. Kurri opted to leave the
NHL to play for the Milano Devils of
the Italian League in 1990-91. That
same year, Kurri represented his
native Finland at the World
Championships but his team, despite
playing in Helsinki, failed to
qualify for the medal rounds.
Kurri
returned to the NHL for the 1991-92
season when he was dealt to the Los
Angeles Kings in a triangular trade
involving the Oilers and the Flyers.
Kurri, again with Gretzky centering,
helped lead the Kings to the Stanley
Cup finals in 1993 but came up short
against a much more disciplined
Montreal squad. Kurri finished out
his NHL career with the Colorado
Avalanche after short stints with
the New York Rangers and Anaheim
Mighty Ducks. Kurri represented
Finland at the 1998 Nagano Olympics
and led Team Finland to an
improbable bronze medal. Kurri's 601
regular season goals with 797
assists for 1398 total points and
his tenacious defensive play qualify
him as a surefire future Hall Of
Famer.
