Frazier turned professional in
Philadelphia and won his firs eleven
fights by knockout, four in the
first round. In 1966, Frazier began
to face opponents who were or had
once been ranked contenders. He
knocked out Billy Daniels and Eddie
Machen and decisioned Oscar Bonavena.
In its 1966 rankings of the top
heavyweights, The Ring placed
Frazier as the sixth-best contender.
After victories over Doug Jones and
Canada's "Man of Steel," George
Chuvalo, in 1967, Frazier was
considered the top contender for the
heavyweight title.
