After becoming the
first female track and field athlete
to win five medals at a single
Olympics in Sydney - gold in the
100m, 200m and 4x400m relay, and
bronze in the long jump and 4x100
relay, Jones added new hardware to
her resume in 2001 with her first
200m world title and second 4x100m
crown. The top 10 100 meter times in
the U.S. in 2001 and four of the top
five times in the world belong to
Jones… in 2002 Jones earned a share
of the IAAF Golden League Jackpot
for the third time in her career
(1998-’01-’02) for her seven wins on
the circuit in the 100 meters. She

A terrific basketball player, she
averaged 22.8 points per game as a
high school senior and was named
California Division I Player of the
Year. As a point guard, she helped
North Carolina to the NCAA title in
her first year of college ball.
Jones missed the 1996 season after
breaking a bone in her foot (5th
metatarsal) the previous fall while
prepping for the U.S. basketball
team at the World University
Games...Jones was inspired to be a
track athlete by the athletes she
saw compete at the 1984 Olympics and
by the late Florence
Griffith-Joyner... never lost in
high school competition after her
freshman year, and she holds the
national high school record in the
200 meters. When she graduated from
high school she was #2 on both the
100 and LJ all-time lists...
A journalism/ communications major
while at North Carolina, Jones made
her broadcasting debut in 2001,
providing color commentary at the
Pontiac Grand Prix USA Indoor
Championships and the Peregrine
Systems U.S. Open. Jones was also on
the basketball court providing
sideline reports for NBC's WNBA
coverage and in the booth providing
color commentary for CBS' NCAA
Women's College Basketball… In 2002
she has made multiple TV appearances
doing sports commentary, including
the U.S. Indoor Championships,
Winter Olympics and WNBA games. … In
2001, Jones was featured on the
covers of Vogue and Ebony magazines…
is coached by Trevor Graham, a
Jamaican Olympian. … did not long
jump in 2001 and also will take 2002
off from the event, with plans to
return to jumping in 2003. … says
the 2008 Games in Beijing will be
her last Olympics.
