Forward. In three years as a starter
at DePaul University, Aguirre scored
2,182 points, averaging 24.5 a game.
A two-time All-American, he was
named to the 1980 U. S. Olympic team
that didn't play because of the
country's boycott of the Moscow
Games. As a junior in 1981, he was
consensus college player of the
year.
The 6-foot-6, 232-pound Aguirre
entered the NBA's college draft
before his senior year and was the
first player chosen, by the Dallas
Mavericks. Strong and clever around
the basket, Aguirre was also a good
outside shooter for a big man, but
he developed a reputation for
moodiness and not always playing at
his best that sometimes hampered him

Injuries
limited him to just 51 games and an
18.7-point average in his rookie
year. He had his finest professional
season in 1983/84, when he led the
NBA in field goals with 925,
averaging 29.5 points per game.
Late in the 1988/89 season, Dallas
traded him to the Detroit Pistons,
where he became a part-time player,
brought off the bench for his
scoring ability. He played on two
NBA championship teams with the
Pistons, in 1989 and 1990.
Aguirre finished his career with Los
Angeles Clippers. He retired after
the Clippers cut him midway through
1993-94 season.
