Known
as "Iron Mike", he brings a wealth
of coaching experience and success
at all levels to ot the game. His
teams have combined for three 50+
win and five 100+ point seasons,
three Presidents Trophy representing
the league’s top record and six
Divisional titles. He has coached
teams to four Stanley Cup Finals,
with Philadelphia in 1985 and 1987,
with Chicago in 1992 and he won the
Stanley Cup with the rangers in 1994
as he brought the rangers their
championship in 54 years. He won the
Jack Adams Award as the league’s top
coach in 1984-85 with Philadelphia
and has also coached three NHL
All-Star Games. He currently ranks
seventh all-time in career regular
season NHL games coached and fifth
in regular season wins and ranks
fourth all-time in both playoff
games coached and playoff victories.
His all-time NHL coaching record is
506-372-117 for a .567 winning
percentage in 995 career games with
a career playoff record of 91-69

Mike
captained his college hockey team at
St. Lawrence University from 1969-72
while earning his Bachelor of
Science degree in Physical
Education. He then earned his
master’s degree in Education at the
University of Toronto and played
hockey for that school as well,
winning a Canadian College
championship in 1973.
The native of Bowmanville, Ontario
has won a championship at each level
he has coached. He began his
coaching career with the junior B
Oshawa Legionaires of the Ontario
Hockey Association in 1977 and took
that team to two metro Toronto
Junior B championships. He then
moved into major Junior with the
Peterborough Petes and in 1979-80 he
led that club to the OHL
championship and a berth in the
Memorial Cup Final. After one season
in Peterborough, he moved to
Rochester Americans of the American
Hockey League for three seasons and
winning a Calder Cup championship in
1982-83.
Mike moved into the NHL in May, 1984
when he was named as head coach of
the Philadelphia Flyers. He won 53
games and a Presidents Trophy with
the league’s best record in his
first season behind an NHL bench in
1984-85, as he led the Flyers to the
Stanley Cup Final and won the jack
Adams Award as the league’s top
coach that season. He became the
first NHL coach to win 45+ games in
each of his first three seasons as
the Flyers won three consecutive
Division titles and the team earned
another Stanley Cup Final berth in
1987. His four year record in
Philadelphia was 190-102-28 (.638
win percentage) with a playoff
record of 32-25 (.561 win
percentage)
He
was named as head coach of the
Chicago Blackhawks in June 1988. In
four seasons behind the the
Blackhawk bench, he led that club to
two 40+ win seasons, the Conference
Final in 1989 and 1990 and his third
career trip to the Stanley Cup Final
in 1992.
