The
sight of Jack Nicklaus winning the
Masters Tournament on television
proved to be the defining moment in
his life. Until then, cycling was
his main pursuit. His mother
organized a course of six lessons at
Welwyn Garden City and within two
years he had become an accomplished
golfer. Won numerous professional
tournaments, but decided to revamp
his swing under the tutelage of
David Leadbetter. The process was
long and painstaking, but paid off
as he won three Open Championships
(1987-90-92) and three Masters
titles (1989-90-96) with new swing.

Won
30 European Tour titles, including
three Volvo PGA Championships and
three successive Irish Opens. Also
won four regular tournaments in USA.
Became first player, in 1992, to win
over £1 million in a season. Split
from Leadbetter in September 1998.
Partnered David Carter to England's
first victory in the World Cup in
Auckland November 1998. Split with
long-time caddie, Fanny Sunesson in
November 1999 after a ten year
partnership but joined up again in
the 2001 season during which he
finished third in the Volvo PGA
Championship at Wentworth Club.
Worked as a commentator for Sky
Sports during The 34th Ryder Cup
Matches at The De Vere Belfry and
admitted the thrill of the occasion
had inspired him to try and make the
European team one more time at
Oakland Hills Country Club in 2004.
Still holds the record as the
leading points scorer for Europe in
Ryder Cup history.
