Tracy McGrady, nicknamed T-Mac was
born in Bartow, Fl. T-Mac was raised
in the small town of Auburndale, FL
also know as the "the hill". Like
alot of boys Tracy wanted to seek a
career in the ever popular sport
baseball. In fact many of his
coaches were sure he would be on the
field instead of the court. Tracy
was sure for awhile he would be on
the dirt too instead of the
basketball court until he reached
junior high.
In junior high Tracy began playing
basketball he was averaging 23.1
points and 12 rebounds per game.
Despite his great talent and
strength Tracy was never a Divison 1
prospect. He wasn't till high school
when Tracy's basketball career
actually started to form. He played
in basketball until his junior year
of high school.
In his Junior year of High School
Tracy was invited to an ABCD
basketball camp in Teaneck, New
Jersey. Durning the camp Tracy
really made himself known he was
racing on a fast break and dunk the
ball over 6-9 Blue Chipper, James
Felton after the dunk the crowd went
wild and so did the USA today,
nameing him player of the year.
In his senior year of high school
Tracy was transferred to Mount Zion
Christian to play one year. Tracy's
senior year at Mount Zion was his
best year yet he lead his team to a
20 and 1 record and was named #2 on
USA Today's Super 25. Tracy was
averaging 27.5 points, 8.7 rebounds,
7.7 assists and 2.8 steals per game
while shooting .564 from field, .389
from three-point range and .791 from
free throw line. There was no
question in anyone's mind that Tracy
was a great player was going all the
way. Tracy was named Player of the
Year once again by USA Today and by
the State of North Carolina.
Tracy was actually planning to go
play for Kentucky when Joe his
basketball coach in high school got
a call from NBA super scout Marty
Blake wanting a schedule of Tracy's
games. NBA teams were already
sending scouts out to look at Tracy.
The thought of skipping college and
pursuing his dream of becoming a NBA
superstar excited him and lead him
to forget Kentucky and entered the
1997 NBA draft along with some other
NBA greats. Tim Duncan, Antonio
Daniels, Derek Anderson and Chauncey
Billups.
